On to this week's contest: The Snowmelt River by Frank P. Ryan!
Awesome cover, right? You want it, right?
On the summit of the fabled mountain Slievenamon in Ireland there is a doorway to an ancient land of terrible power. The gate of Feimhin has lain closed for centuries, the secret of its opening long lost. But now four orphans drawn together by Fate must pass through the portal to face their destinies. What they find beyond is the enchanted but war-ravaged world of Tír, a strange land populated by monsters. Here death waits at every corner and they must learn to fight if they are to survive. And they'd better learn quickly, because their enemy, the Tyrant of the Wastelands, is growing in power.
Listen up, U.S. people! This book is not available here! This is your chance to get your paws on it.
But of course I'll make you work for it. Come up with a cool monster for me and you will be entered to win the book. Good luck!

Gaunab (God of Death)
ReplyDelete“Basi hofu kuchukua wewe,” Swahili for “let fear take you” is this monsters calling card. It’s said that if a willing surrogate mixes their blood with the powder of an elephants tusk and ingest it, they will be reborn as the “mungu wa kifo,” God of death.
The God’s body frame is long and wiry, with muscle and bone. The creature lacks skin, and it’s perspires a thick black ooze that rots all living entities that makes contact with it. The two long arms hang down just below the knees in an unnatural position that causes the bones to crack and pop in and out of join as it moves. The hands of the creature possess three clawed fingers, like that of a prehistoric predator. The legs are long, but the knee joints are inverted to face backward, not allowing it to stand up fully unless it pops them back the right way. The head of the beast is a black marble skull infested with insects that crawl in and out freely from every orifice. It does not speak, however the crow that rests atop its head calls the name of those the beast will kill, and once the name has been cased into Mung wa kifo’s ear, there is no hope for that persons soul. The God lives in perpetual pain and suffering, and wishes that pain to be inflicted on its victims tenfold.
Once summoned, the creature is bound to surrogate who summoned its body for three days. On the third day, it is again expelled to hells gates. The body used as a vessel is left as little more than ashes, devoid of any recognizable remains.

ReplyDeleteThe Dysonian: This mighty lizard-like beast, with wicked talons and a fanged maw, has an internal biological system, with three hearts, which generates great heat. Fortunately, its hooped tale acts as a potent fan, blowing a constant stream of very cool act which helps to regulate its temperature so it does not overheat and die.
ReplyDeleteOk , how about a mobile fungus creature? Constantly regrowing (cue some time-lapse photography of mushrooms growing, sporing, dying & regrowing....!),pretty hideous (I'm seeing slime....)& generally unpleasant....!
ReplyDeleteHogwynth the Menhir. A combination of standing stones each ressembling limbs, torso, head etc brought together by an incantation. A terrifying stone beast, mainly used as a protector of oppressed villages and villagers although to appease the monster, one must provide a human sacrifice the rewards are clear however when the enemy is literally crushed and smashed to oblivion. If the deactivation incantation is not read, the beast will forever roam free.
